Weekly Photo Challenge – Carefree

Pigeon Bathing Venice

This week’s theme: Carefree

Of course I shall be drawing inspiration for some time to come from the hundreds of photos that I took while I was away this past week in Venice and around the North-eastern Italian state of Veneto.

I came across a small flock of pigeons and a young seagull yesterday morning while still in Venice waiting turn to have a drink and a bath in the fabulous wrought iron water fountain at the water’s edge on the islet of Venice’s La Giudecca, effectively the Jewish quarter. Although this photo is originally in colour, I’ve tweaked it and played with it a little to give you a black and white version, which I personally love.

I’m also going to include here the short clip of film I took of the pigeons bathing. It’s enchanting to watch, and made my morning in amongst all the other visual treasures I encountered. They were really enjoying themselves, utterly oblivious to my presence except for the rather shy young seagull in the background who wanted to join in but seemed to be quite wary of me…

    1. I did, and looking forward to the next time 🙂

They are indeed the Dolomites you spy up top, gobsmackingly impressive too… there’s a funny story about that whole trip, I made a friend that morning (my new room mate), she was Brazilian would you believe, and she came with me. If it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t have visited the Tre Cime. I’m very pleased I did! lol

      1. I saw posters for an exhibition about Otzi back down in Auronzo Di Cadore, but most places were shut when we arrived. There was some festival going on there, and by the time we came back through on the coach in the evening people had seemingly come out of the woodwork, and the sleepy little town was wide awake again. Nice little town by the way, very picture-postcard. Not a bad place to wake up of a morning… what a view!

  1. Great photo and interpretation of the theme. I’m planning to visit Venice later this year and can’t wait! I have to say I generally have a strong dislike for pigeons. However your video may have endeared them to me slightly! Thanks for visiting my blog, much appreciated.

    1. You are very welcome Ben.
I’m very excited for you and your visit to Venice, you are going to love it! I shall keep my eyes peeled for upcoming Venice posts and pics on your blog 😉

  2. What a wonderful carefree moment indeed Ish! Great video too! I loved watching them. Thanks for sharing hon and great entry for the challenge. 😀 *hugs*

    1. Thank you Sophia for your lovely comment 🙂 It was such a delight to walk around Venice at my leisure and be able to take the time to observe and capture such moments. In fact nearly all the water fountains I passed across the islands had at least one resident pigeon, and these guys in the film were really comical and sweet. Venice doesn’t have too much wildlife, so it was nice to see when I came across it.
      Hugs back

    1. Thanks T 🙂 I returned home on Monday evening 😦 I could very easily have stayed in Venice indefinitely, but it was really great to see my children again. It was an amazing experience, and I learned a lot on many different levels. Things I’m sure I will blog about over the next few weeks. Big realisations that have changed me in many ways.
      How are you lady?

      1. Ish,

That’s great (realizations). That to me is the best thing about travel. It’s a chance to shift your head, rethink, meditate without interruption which I know is hard with little ones who have to say something now (!) alot. Haha.

Welcome back. 🙂 I’m looking forward to hearing what you got out of it, and hope you had tons of great food. 🙂 I’m good, really busy all of a sudden (taking on a volunteer agreement) and dating???

As if I didn’t have a film also to piece together.

But life is good. And I can imagine how great it was to see your kids again, I have nieces and nephews and I practically badger my brothers to see em.’ Haha.

        Er….one day…my own!

        xo

      2. It’s great that your keeping busy and that you’re dating!? That’s great news 🙂 I guess you have undergone a shift of your own lately.

I would like to say that I ate well at lots of nice restaurants while I was away, but the truth is owing to how expensive it was my eating habits were fairly ad hoc and erratic! lol Also it was too hot to eat much of the time, so a lot of water was consumed and a lot of exercise had through the miles of walking through narrow streets and galleries! I loved it!
One real pleasure I had was being able to peruse the wonderful galleries and study the paintings and techniques, taking notes, making little sketches of my own. Bliss! 🙂

        xo
